Court School

Remember, at this point in the investigation, it is impossible to predict whether your child will have to testify.  Most of the children that we see at the Child Advocacy Center never have to testify in court.  But, when they do, we want to help them feel prepared and comfortable.

  • To improve a child’s ability to answer questions in court in the most accurate, complete and truthful manner.

  • To help the child to be perceived as a confident and credible witnessss

  • To reduce the stress and anxiety that a child may experience when testifying

  • To help the child understand the nature and seriousness of the proceedings

  • To educate the child and the non-offending caregiver about the court proces

Whenever possible, children are taken to an actual courtroom where they are allowed to practice being a judge, the county attorney, the defense attorney and a witness.  We use pictures and have a coloring book just for kids to explain court.  We do not talk about any of the specifics of their actual case.

When it looks as though your child may be testifying in criminal or juvenile court, the county attorney or your child advocate will generally make arrangements for Court School.  If for some reason they forget, you can request that your child attend this special school just for kids.  There is no cost for Court School and we can help with transportation if needed.
